I wanted to give the supportive readers who follow my blog a new short story Valentine gift this weekend. I’m in the middle of finishing The Jade Garden which requires extensive research about Vietnam, and didn’t have the creative energy to think up a new to me story.
Then I remembered the Vault. The Vault holds over twenty short stories and full length novels of mine that need work, or in the case of a few, thankfully will never see the light of day.
Sifting through some of the treasures, I found Mixed, formerly titled Chance Encounter. I wrote Mixed last year when I was toying with the idea of writing a science fiction series to give away here on my website. In Memory of the Color Yellow, the cataclysm has already taken place. In Mixed, it’s just beginning. People are turning their backs on loved ones, fear and suspicion reign. There are sensitive racial issues which may offend some readers, and for this I’m truly sorry.
I also incorporate a few of my own boogeymen; DNA testing for personal use has the potential for catastrophe if used by the wrong people. I got the shock of my life when I discovered I wasn’t 50% Greek, but only 26%, and the rest is Ashkenazi Jewish and Russian. I wish I knew the who and when of it. I rewrote the story from that perspective.
I love the protagonist, who doesn’t have a name. She might have to return someday.
Be sure to sign up for my email to receive Mixed this weekend. Simply fill out the form to the right. Thanks!
